The Alestes Tetra, also known as the Longfin Tetra (Brycinus longipinnis), is an African freshwater fish characterized by its elongated dorsal and anal fins, particularly in males. It's a schooling, peaceful, and active fish with an iridescent silver body that exhibits blue and yellow hues, growing up to 5cm (about 2 inches) in length. While it can be kept in a community aquarium, it requires a large, well-planted tank with hiding spots, and it must be housed in groups of at least 5 to 8 individuals. Appearance and Characteristics Color:Iridescent silver with blue and yellow hues. Fins:Most notably, the males develop long, flowing dorsal and anal fins, giving the species its "Longfin Tetra" common name. Size:Grows to about 5 cm (2 inches) in length. Activity:An energetic and active schooling fish that requires ample swimming space. Behavior and Temperament Schooling:A gregarious species, it should be kept in groups of at least 5-8 individuals to ensure proper social structure and to help them feel secure. Peaceful:Generally a peaceful and tranquil fish, making it a good candidate for a community aquarium. Territoriality:Due to their activity and size, they can intimidate smaller or slower-moving community fish, so tank mates should be chosen carefully. Aquarium Requirements Tank Size:Needs a large aquarium, with tanks of at least 55 gallons being a good starting point, and even larger tanks being recommended. Aquascaping:A well-planted aquarium is ideal, providing cover and hiding spots for the fish to feel secure. Water Parameters:Prefers stable water conditions, with a temperature range of 72-80°F (22-27°C) and a pH between 6.5-7.5. Diet and Feeding Omnivorous:The Alestes Tetra has an omnivorous diet and will readily accept high-quality flake and pellet foods. Supplements:A varied diet including frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp can enhance their health and color.
