Red Cherry Shrimp

$5.99

Red Cherry Shrimp are small, peaceful, freshwater aquarium crustaceans, known for their vibrant red color and easy care. They originate from Taiwan and are a selectively bred color morph of the wild Neocaridina davidi species. These dwarf shrimp grow to about 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm), with females being larger and more intensely colored than males. They are excellent scavengers, excellent at cleaning algae and biofilm, and their bright red color makes them a popular and decorative choice for planted and community tanks. Key Characteristics Size:Adults typically reach 2-4 cm (0.8-1.6 inches) in length. Color:While the wild type is brown, the popular red morph is selectively bred for a range of red intensities, with females being brighter. Anatomy:Like other shrimp, they have a segmented body, a rostrum (pointy nose), stalked eyes, antennae, and five pairs of legs. Lifespan:Under ideal conditions, they can live for one to two years. Habitat & Environment Origin:Native to Taiwan. Tank Environment:They thrive in freshwater aquariums and are known for being hardy and adaptable to a range of conditions. Diet & Behavior Diet:They are omnivores and primarily feed on algae, biofilm, and detritus, which makes them excellent cleaners. Behavior:Red Cherry Shrimp are active and peaceful, making them ideal for community tanks. They will explore new additions to their tank and clean them thoroughly. Breeding & Sex Differences Sex Differences:Females are generally larger and more vividly colored than males. Moulting:They shed their exoskeleton, or carapace, as they grow, a process called moulting, after which they seek a safe, hidden spot to allow their new shell to harden. Reproduction:They do not have a distinct larval stage, meaning they are born as miniature versions of the adult shrimp, a trait that makes them easier to breed in captivity.
