These catfish can reach up to 60 cm (2 feet) in length and are typically dusky grey with a bluish tint on their backs, fading to a lighter color on their bellies. They have multiple barbels around their mouths and possess sharp spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins, which can inflict painful wounds.
